A Submarine Mechanic

Have you ever watched the movie Das Boot?  That is one of my all time favorite movies.  It’s about a German U-Boat during WWII, and is just a really good movie, though tragic.

In the boat, there is a bedraggled submarine engineer meant to keep the boat working.  The boat gets beat up with depth charges, you see him with a piece of wood and a wrench beating things back into place.

That’s what I felt like the past two days.  Over the weekend, the A/C went out in my core room, got at least 125 degrees in there (due to some sensors that do an emergency shutdown at that temperature), and cooked a lot of stuff.  I’ve spent two long, but successful, days at beating my engine room back into working order for the most part.  All in all, only lost one piece of equipment, and a few camera’s due to power spikes caused by the heat.  The camera’s, not much I can do about them, since we’re due to start retrofitting the system in the next month.

I did see the fastest shipment ever of a part though.  One of my 3550 switches blew out the two GBIC fiber ports, and after troubleshooting that issue for a good hour, ordered a new one through the company in D.C.  I got the switch in 2 hours, though it took another 4 hours in configuring it to get online and working (I’m a bit rusty in Cisco, or it would have only taken 2 or 3)

Either way, Monday morning, opening the door to what felt like hell, I felt like that U-Boat engineer.  We just took a bunch of hits, we’re taking on water (or, in this case, having absolutely no water pass through the cooling system), I have 30 pieces of equipment screaming at me with hi temp alarms, and it’s Wednesday morning, and I got the last piece of equipment back online.  We’re hobbling back to coast now.

I’m tired, but it was fun.  I finally have some coffee now too :)

What’s your opinion on net neutrality

I must be busy, because I let this story slip by a week without seeing or hearing about it. It’s a story that really does irritate me, because just like any law or precedence set by one individual, it opens Pandora’s box.

You can find the story here and here.

Is Fred Phelps Gay?

As well as the Westboro Baptist Church followers?  The only reason I can think of someone hating this much hatred for a single group is because he was kicked out, or he’s scared of something.  Maybe he got his little pee pee suckled on a few years ago by some flamboyant guy, and returned the favor one night at some night club, but felt ashamed of it the next day…so to hide his shame he went on the attack….or could be that he was the first one doing the suckling, got the happy ending of calories, and when it was his turn, got giggled at because he has a small pee pee, and a truly flamboyant man would rather chew on a tic-tac…so Fred got mad, and started his attack.  It could be that maybe he’s just a sort of real life personification of the Colonel character in American Beauty, hoping that on some cold and rainy night he’ll find the man of his dreams and can come out of the closet – Though he’d have to renounce Mississippi as a homeland.

Anyways, I read that his church <sic Clan> is going to protest another funeral.  This time it’s Heath Ledger’s…why?  Because he played a gay man in a movie once.  Wow, this guy…I’m surprised that he doesn’t protest funeral’s of people who once walked past a gay person at one time, without even knowing it.

I wonder if Fred Phelps and his followers know that it is a 100% certainty that they, with every breath they inhale, breath the air that a Gay man or woman exhaled.  And you know how the onset of gay comes on, it’s an airborne contagion.  Soon, we’ll all be gay!

Wait, I feel a lisp coming on sweetheart!

Well, I’m a little saddened that it is also my responsibility to protect these types as well, such as Phelps and his gang.  It’s sort of like telling the kids they have to clean their room…you know they don’t want to, because there is no benefit in it other than having the mom-dad creature shut up about it.  But, I can’t pick and choose…just wish we could vote them off the island.
