Will this signal the new trend?

Below is the article from CNN.

I know this is only a state doing this, not the feds. But I also think that it’s signalling a trend that could be dangerous for everyday citizens in the future….To be arrested on the possibility that you’ll do something illegal in the future.

It reminds me of when I was growing up, my mom would beat my ass. I’d ask, what was that for? She’d say, because you’re bound to do something that I won’t catch you doing…So, I’d get a preemptive beating.

If this gets to be a successful way of stopping future crimes, what’s to stop law enforcement, at any level, from just coming in and arresting you at home, at work, at the grocery store. Say that there is a list of indicators that they build that supposedly are tell-tale signs of impending mischief, like drinking coffee with a non-predominant hand, while having your predominant hand in your pocket….Means he’s up to no good…so you get arrested.

Me, I’m an IT guy. People in the IT world have the potential of destroying billions of dollars in data, or selling it, or hiding it…That potential is there. When will it be that your friendly neighborhood network admin is going to be arrested, because he has the potential of evil-doing…I live in an apartment, not owning a home. Can I be arrested because it’s technically someone else’s property, if I want to drink a few brews in the living room on Friday night?

When I lived in Texas 10 years ago, I got arrested twice for something very similar to what’s described below, though, I wasn’t arrested in the bar, I got thrown to the ground mere feet from the cab I was walking to…Twice…and charged with public intox. Even though I got both of those thrown out, it still happened. I expected it to happen too, living in a military town, soldiers always get thrown in jail for frivolous reasons, because well, it’s the cities income, and soldiers are in a unique position to where they Have to pay, regardless.

I dunno, I think this could be that little indicator telling us that our kids will be living with the fear of secret police dragging people away because of something that could potentially happen.

You say, man, you sure do bitch a lot…why not suggest a fix for it. I usually do, but here’s one that I guarantee would work, except the ACLU wouldn’t like it (bitches). Jail for any infraction is not justified. You get pulled over for DUI, you get 30 lashes at the courthouse, outside, in public. Get another one, double it, the third time, triple it. If you fail to see the light at the end of the tunnel, then you get jail. Hard labor. The same for shoplifting, petty theft, so forth. I would bring it down to 5 lashes for shoplifting….it’s not a life threatening crime…Embarrass the person, and give them an adult spanking. It works for kids, and it will work for adults. Do something bad, get spanked and embarrassed. See how many people out there will be willing to be dumb after a year of seeing their friends and family be beaten during lunch break.

But let them at least commit a crime first.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) — Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission’s Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

“We feel that the only way we’re going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this,” she said.

“There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they’re intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car,” Beck said. “People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss.”

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

Public embarrassment is a fantastic idea. It would probably have a profound affect on the crime level….
