Life and Politics
Anyways, the original point I was going to make is that he found a place that suits him, and in some aspects, I have to. In a lot of aspects. I have a job that is fun, comfortable, and keeps me busy. I get to go home every night to a woman that is just too easy to get along with, and a little girl that is entirely too old for her age. I get to talk to my daughter on a pretty regular basis, and that makes me happy. She’s definitely going to be the girly girl out of the extended family, that’s for sure. It’s a very nice lull in activity that I’m enjoying; no politics at work, no drama at home, a relatively quiet neighborhood, and clear skies. I think for the first time, I’m starting to feel the gist of what this civilian life is supposed to be. It’s comforting, and though I’m not used to it, I’m not complaining.
Politics, that was the other issue I was going to bring up. For the first time too, it’s not politics at home or at work. I’m thinking a bit more global here. The big issue on the news is how a company owned by the state of UAE, Dubai something or another, being granted access to controlling maybe a dozen ports, though I think it’s closer to half that number. The big uproar is simply over the fact that an Arab owned company is going to be in charge of some of our ports. How can we let that happen? What about our security? The Terrorists could ship something in a container now and we could all die!…
Two things I want to note. 1, Japan attacked us 7Dec41, killed thousands of people, got us into a war…they now own a significant portion of our country…and nobody seems to be complaining. 2. Security at major ports has always been an issue, and to be honest, if you wanted to ship something that ’s going to harm a ton of people, you always could. Having ownership of the management system of some ports isn’t going to change that. The security won’t be any different, though with all the stuff in the news, I’m sure that it’s going to be brought to light that “hey, security sucks, we have to somehow increase it”…..
It’s the big picture that I don’t think people are looking at. 1st, if we allow so many other countries have ownership of properties and so forth here, why not an Arab country? Is it because they’re not Christian that has people in an uproar? I don’t think so, I think it’s an uninformed population making rash decisions that are akin to bigotry. No, it is bigotry. Another big picture item is that if we’re going to try and help stabilize the middle east in any kind of way, we have to show them with actions and not just words, that we’re willing and able to give them the same considerations in every aspect of having a free-market society that we give to everybody else.
Well, I have work to be done. Feel free to disagree with me, publicly. I’d enjoy a debate :) Maybe we’ll make CNN…
Geeking out
So, sitting in an office where most everybody is gone, it’s quiet. I hear the hum of two computers and the A/C unit above me, and the occasional squeek of the door outside. It’s leaving me with not a lot to do. That’s fine, it is Stargate night afterall :)
So, geeking out, that’s what I was going to talk about. I’ve put a webtracker on 3 blogs this morning, and shamelessly plugged one of my sites (http://tech2everyday.blogspot.com/ ) and watched the tracker go. It’s cool to see real live feeds of when someone goes to the site, see where they’re from, what ISP they’re using or if it’s a company. Not bad for free. The one drawback is that it won’t email me detailed reports with the free one, only summary’s. That and the log file is very small, and looks like I’ll have to keep those cleaned about every 4-5 days.
I may, one day, write in the other blog about counters and so forth. I’m waiting on Van to actually subscribe and write, and he’d be a much better person to cover something like that. He has started a new site that I may migrate to eventually, but since he’s in the process of moving to Georgia, it might be a little while before he’s up and running.
I have no point to this. That’s fine by me.
