Issues of security

I read a story on CNN’s site about how the new Maps service on Google, and how people think this is leading to a violation in privacy. The big issue is that a person can zoom in and get what looks like 10meter imagery on a selected address.

Just because Google has it doesn’t mean this is new. Microsoft has had Terra-server up and running for a long time. The big diffences is that most people probably don’t know what Terra is, and it doesn’t let you zoom in from regular map data down to imagery.

I like it. It reminds me of the system that I fielded for the Army a few years back. The big difference is, google doesn’t have the resolution that I had on that system. It also doesn’t have a targeting clearance list on it…So I guess we won’t be able to call in airstrikes through Google anytime soon…I guess that’s a good thing…

This leads me into another issue of security. I’m reading a book by Kevin Mitnick on social engineering. It makes me realize that I’ve been using some of these techniques for years and not really tried too. Anyways, what I was trying to get to was that people take their privacy at face value. They will put up curtains in your windows, and nobody can see inside. They will then leave the door unlocked when they go to work. It is a proven fact that it is considerably easier to break into something that isn’t locked and guarded…

The interesting thing is, most people don’t realize that a great deal of your personal information is available for free or on the cheap on a computer that has internet access. Most people don’t realize the papertrail they leave for others to use all the time. It takes a lot of work to actually not leave a trail. This I know, I really try not to leave much of a trail, a lot less than most people.

Well, I wanted to say something about this before I forgot. I just took a horse pill of a muscle relaxer, and I’m getting quite foggy brained. I’ll expand on this idea at a later date, possibly.
